The original tale of the little mermaid
What the hell, I just read up on the original tale and that is some dark shit. Like the version everyone else knows, she lives as a princess of an undersea kingdom, her dad is the king, she has a enchanting voice, and the Sea Witch still exists, but thats where the similarities end. So when they all turn 15, they’re allowed to go see the human kingdom. Being the last of her sisters, shes mad excited and everything but when she rises to the surface, there’s like this handsome prince who almost drowns in a storm(?). She rescues him, leaves him at a temple, where a temple girl picks him up and so on. After this, she goes home where her grandmother educates her a bit on human vs merfolk. Humans live shortly but have an eternal soul that goes to heaven. Merfolk live 300 years (did anyone else know that..?) and turn into seafoam. The princess decides the prince and an eternal soul is worth it so the Sea Witch offers her a potion that:
- gives legs(moderate plus)
- requires her to give up her tongue (most enchanting voice in the world, moderate minus)
- will never allow her to return to sea (hate the sea so.. small minus)
- will make her feel as if a sword is passing through her, when shes taking the potion (big minus)
- pretty legs and can dance better than all the humans BUT “will constantly feel like she is walking on sharp swords hard enough to make her bleed” (super fucking huge huge huge minus)
- Last condition: has to kiss and marry prince, hence giving her part of his soul. However, if he marries someone else, on the dawn of the first day, she dies/turns into seafoam.
So she takes the potion and meets the prince, who thinks shes just a pretty, mute girl. He likes seeing her dance, so she does it for him despite the excruciating pain. When the king tells the prince to marry the princess of a neighboring kingdom, he says no at first but says yes when he finds out she was the girl from the temple (sent there to learn), because he can only love the girl who saved him. There’s a wedding, the prince and princess are married and she’s waiting for death, when the Sea Witch offers her one more chance: kill the prince, let his blood drip on her feet, and she will happily be reinstated to her former mermaid princess status.
When she sees the sleeping prince and princess, she cant kill him and ends up throwing herself into the sea where, instead of becoming nonexistent, she feels free and actually ends up turning into a daughter of air, a spirit, when shes given another chance to become an eternal soul as long as she does good deeds for 300 years.
Did anyone else find this mad interesting?
The original story of the little mermaid is that she must kill the prince in order to be human, and in the end, she loves him too much and kills herself instead.
